Story Preservation Series on Covid-19: Impact and Insight

Project Series on Covid-19 for K-12

SPI Series on Covid-19 for K-12

Story Preservation Initiative is developing a project series designed to help young people better understand Covid-19 and its impact across the spectrum - from physical and mental well being and the pain of loss to the health of the economy, the state of education, and how we are all managing to come to terms with a “new normal” that is anything but.

Funded by private donors, foundations, and with a grant from the National Geographic Society, the series will include stories told by front-line health care workers, mental health professionals, teachers and parents, medical researchers, and everyday people whose lives have, in differing ways and to different degrees, been forever changed by Covid-19.  This collection of stories is being developed to help to shed light not only on the difficulty and horror that is Covid-19 but also on the interconnectedness of all beings.

SPI-produced materials open new pathways of thought and encourage students to take a deeper dive into understanding the complexities of life in the Covid era.

Two stories in the series on Covid-19 have already been produced and uploaded to SPI’s Learning Lab sites.

For K-3 set, Vidaga’s Horn is an original modern-day folktale that serves as a metaphor for living in the time of Covid-19.   The tale focuses on the importance of kindness, caring, and showing respect for one another to “part the dark clouds” that surround us.

For middle and high school students, Dartmouth College’s Dr. Kendall Hoyt shares basic information on SARS-2 and Covid-19, including where it came from, how it spreads, and best practices to halt its transmission.  She also talks about the history of pandemics and Covid-19 vaccines, their development and distribution.

Through these recordings and related educational materials, Story Preservation hopes to spark greater understanding and meaningful conversation between teachers and their students and parents and their children.

Better understanding of the world takes away fear and offers young people hope.
