SPI Adds Stories and Music for the Pre-K and K Set
Fostering literacy & SEL, Ages 3+
Story Preservation is delighted to announce that we’ve added five new stories to our Storytelling project for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners by the renowned storyteller Diane Ferlatte.
Diane’s stories spring to life with song, music, rhythm, humor, and lots of listener participation. Accompanied by Erik Pearson on banjo and guitar, her stories make for a foot-tapping, hand-clapping listening experience that is downright irresistible, no matter what your age. To listen to a brief excerpt of Diane’s rendition of the nursery rhyme “This Old Man,” click here.
A National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, Diane has been honored with the National Storytelling Network’s Circle of Excellence Award and multiple Parents’ Choice, American Library Association, iParenting Media, Storytelling World, and National Parenting Publications awards. She was a 2008 Grammy nominee.
All of the tellers included in the SPI project are, simply put, world-class.
Diane’s stories include nursery rhymes put to music and variations on Aesop’s fables. SPI is in the process of developing related projects around the stories to reinforce visualization, foster literacy skills, and bring kids together for collaborative fun.
With all of her success, Diane continues to focus much of her work in schools and libraries because, she believes, this is where the tradition of storytelling is to be nurtured and the lessons of the stories most need to be heard.
SPI is working to expand and further diversify its Storytelling Learning Lab site to make it an even more meaningful resource for teachers, parents, and anyone who wants to bring a smile to a child’s face.
We’re happy to report that we have Expressions of Interest from two other extraordinary, world-renown tellers, one whose work focuses on traditional Asian folklore, and the other on traditional Native American tales. We are currently seeking funding to add their voices to the collection. More on that to follow.
SPI’s K-3 American Sign Language project is now in post-production with upload to the site expected within the next several weeks. As the ASL project evolved, with much good fortune, we were, quite last minute, able to bring Ian Sanborn onboard as the ASL interpreter. Ian is a remarkably talented interpreter and eight year veteran of the National Theatre of the Deaf. Watch a Youtube of Ian here. Not our production, but it is worth the view and will give you a good idea of what’s to come! So, if you haven’t already, check out SPI’s K-3 (soon-to-include Pre-K) Learning Lab site, accessed through our website: www.storypreservation.org
Story Preservation Initiative makes its work available to all, free of charge. We are a small non-profit whose mission is to positively impact the lives of young people through the sharing of ideas, the transformative power of story, and the development of educational materials that engage the hearts as well as the minds of children of all ages.
Please consider making a donation - in any amount - to help us keep the stories coming. To make a tax-deductible donation, click here.
