Jeff Scher is an animator—but really, he explains, he’s a painter who paints in motion.
His unique, hand-crafted animations blend abstraction, rhythm, and storytelling—earning recognition from major institutions and audiences around the world.
His film The Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm, which explores memory and history through the eyes of a child, earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation.
Jeff’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Academy Film Archive, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, the Pompidou Center, Musée d’Art Moderne, Vienna Kunsthalle, and the Austrian National Archive.
In his Story Preservation Initiative talk, Jeff shares the process behind some of his most personal and visually poetic animations. He also reflects on teaching, what he imparts to his students, and the impact of animation as an expressive art form.
