Children’s book author-illustrator Jason Chin joins celebrated writer-illustrators Tomie dePaola (1934-2020) and Ashley Bryan (1923-2022) as SPI adds his personal narrative to our collection.
As illustrator for Life After Whale, Jason and author Lynn Brunelle offer “readers a poignant exploration of marine life and environmental change. Known for his ability to merge breathtaking illustrations with scientific depth, Jason’s new work continues to build on his passion for explaining the natural world through the lens of fiction and art. As with his previous titles, Life After Whale uses vivid imagery and thoughtful storytelling to engage young readers, making complex topics both accessible and inspiring.”*
In 2022, Jason won the prestigious Caldecott Award for his watercolor illustrations for Watercress. His artwork for the book was hailed by the New York Times as “captivating watercolor art, executed with a mix of Chinese and Western techniques, combining meticulous, gut-wrenching realism with dreamlike panoramas.” Watercress author Andrea Wang was named a Newbery Honoree for what the Times called her “multi-layered, poetic text ….”
Throughout his still young career, Jason has received numerous awards for his work. He is an accomplished writer-illustrator of picture books that explore and explain the natural world. Artfully combining a fictional storyline, stunningly detailed illustrations, and scientific facts, he effectively conveys complex scientific material to Independent, early, and middle-grade readers.
