Hole in the Sea

by Charlotte Blake Alston

Hole in the Sea is a creation tale about the rise and fall of the tides. It sets the stage for exploring creation stories ranging from contemporary to Native American and African. After listening, reading, and classroom discussion, students are asked to make up their own creation story explaining how day and night came to be. This project fosters imaginative/divergent thinking, creativity, literacy, and collaboration. It gives young people an understanding of early cultures that, through story, dance, or song, passed along the history of their people.

This is an excellent opportunity for teachers and parents to open up discussions about different cultures and core beliefs and a fun way to light kids’ “cognitive fire.”
