Anansi's Children
Anansi’s Children is a Ghanaian Moon creation story.
Anansi is a West African folktale character. He often takes the shape of a spider and is considered to be the god of all knowledge and stories. Anansi is one of the most important characters in West African, African-American, and Caribbean folklore, and kids everywhere love him!
Project activities focus on developing active listening skills, visualization, and understanding that fictional or mythological characters exhibit specific personality traits.
Anansi is generally characterized as a trickster – or rogue.
Sharing with students other Anansi stories and discussing “characterization,” they will understand that regardless of the plot of a story, the character always remains true.
Other stories/characters that teachers may want to consider are Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, Tomie dePaola’s Strega Nona, and Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit. All of these characters can be counted on to consistently exhibit their unique personality traits, regardless of the story.
